How to reset Windows 11 forgotten password with Password Reset Disk

how to reset a windows password
Remembering passwords can be a real pain, and it is quite normal to occasionally forget a password or two. However, if that password happens to be your Windows 11 password, then you are in a really tight spot. This is because resetting a known password in Windows 11 is pretty simple, resetting a forgotten password is equally difficult. Especially if it’s a local Administrator password, and you do not have any other Administrator account on that Windows 11 PC. However, Microsoft did provide a secret utility called a Forgotten Password Wizard, anticipating such a situation.

What is the Forgotten Password Wizard

A Forgotten Password Wizard is a hidden tool inside your Windows 11 arsenal that can be used to prepare a Password Reset Disk, this can reset the password for any local Windows 11 account, even if it’s an Administrator account.

Things to remember before creating the Password Reset Disk

Here are a few things you need to keep in mind before you use the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a Password Reset Disk for your Windows 11 PC:

1. Even though we call it a Password Reset Disk, you can use a USB drive instead of atleast 8GB capacity

2. This is a preventive measure since you cannot use a Password Reset Disk prepared in another Windows 11 PC to unlock the local account of your own Windows 11 PC. So, you need to prepare this Password Reset Disk before you forget your Windows 11 password, and get locked out of your own PC. If you are already locked out of your Windows PC because of a forgotten password, then this utility is of no use to you until you get back access to your locked Windows 11 account

3. The Password Reset Disk can reset the password for only local accounts, including local Administrator accounts. It cannot reset the password for a Microsoft Live account

4. The Forgotten Password Wizard is already installed on your Windows 11 PC, you do not need to go through the pain of installing something new

5. If you do not have a blank USB drive with you, ensure to create a backup of the data in the drive. We would be formatting the USB drive during the process, and you would end up losing all the data otherwise

How to prepare the Password Reset Disk

Using the Forgotten Password Wizard to create the Password Reset Disk is actually a very simple process, just follow the steps given below and you would do just fine.

1. Insert the blank USB drive in your Windows 11 PC

2. Click on the Search icon on the taskbar and then search for the term reset. You’ll see the option Create a password reset disk, click on Open to start the Forgotten Password Wizard

Remove the USB from the drive and keep it in a safe place, so that you can use it if you ever forget the password to your Windows 11 PC

How to use the Password Reset Disk

Now that you have prepared the Password Reset Disk for your Windows 11 PC, here we will show you how you can use it to reset the password for your Windows 11 locked user account. Without knowing how to reset the password, the Password Reset Disk is of no use to you.

1. Boot your Windows 11 PC and go to the login screen of your locked user account

2. Click on the Reset Password link just below the box where you enter your Windows 11 password

3. Insert the Password Reset Disk USB drive, this should bring up the Password Reset Wizard (not the Forgotten Password Wizard, that was for creating the Password Reset Disk) on your locked screen. Click on Next to continue

4. On the next window, select the Password Reset Disk USB drive from the dropdown menu, and then click Next

5. Now the Password Reset Wizard would ask you to type in a new password, twice, along with a hint for you to remember the password in case you forget it once again. Please fill-in the required details and click on Next

6. Finally, click on the Finish button to exit the Password Reset Wizard. You’ll be back at the login screen. This time, sign-in to your locked Windows 11 account with the new password that you set just now, and you’ll be able to login to your Windows 11 PC without any problem at all

Known issues with the Password Reset Disk

The Password Reset Disk is easy to create, only if you can get the Forgotten Password Wizard to open properly. The Password Reset Disk wizard not responding is the most common issue with the Forgotten Password Wizard in Windows 11, here’s how to solve it:

1. Check if you have entered the blank USB drive

2. Press Alt+Tab on your keyboard to check if the Forgotten Password Wizard is running in the background like shown below. If it is, try clicking on it while pressing the Alt+Tab keys to see if it becomes accessible. If not, then click on the X icon to close the Forgotten Password Wizard window that is running in the background and move to the next step

3. Click on the Search icon on the taskbar and search for the term control panel. Once you can see the Control Panel app, click on Open

4. Inside Control Panel, click on User Accounts

Trust me, the complete process is not as difficult as it sounds once you start implementing it. However, as mentioned earlier, this is more of a preventive measure. If you do not have the Password Reset Disk, and you have forgotten your Windows 11 local account password, then this method is of no use to you. There are other methods for those situations too, however, we will cover them in some other post.
